The tale of a Canadian fishing in Baja California Sur, by Steve Yip.
One of the first reasons for me coming here to Baja for the past eight years, was to experience the fishing that I had heard so much about. Even while growing up in Canada, fishing the lakes and streams of the Rocky Mountains as well as the cool northern Pacific waters off the coast of British Columbia, would be a tough act to follow, but the crystal clear emerald waters of the Sea of Cortez and Pacific Ocean of Baja California Sur did not fall short of amazing and have always left me extremely satisfied.
Take it from me: the first time you get a fish on over 100lbs (45 kilos) you will be “hooked” as well! There is no other feeling like it and if you have any experience fishing, you know what I mean by this.
Since living here almost three years now, and calling San Jose del Cabo home, I have been fortunate enough to catch many of the native species of fish that abundantly can be found in here, including Tuna, Dorado, Sierra, Wahoo, Marlin and Rooster Fish, just to mention a few. Of course, hooking them and catching them are two totally different things… and when you have a Tuna in excess of three hundred lbs (140 kilos) on your line for over an hour and a half, you will understand the term “sport fishing” and why you really never have won the battle with a fish until it is in the boat.
That being said, even if you do not land “the big one” or catch a pile of fish to take home for supper, there is always next time, and those times where I have caught nothing are very few and far between. I like to tell people that the greatest part of being on the water here is seeing animals you would not normally see elsewhere: whales, turtles, dolphins, sharks, sea lions and many other amazing and majestic creatures.
And you would wonder if living in Los Cabos is easy, secure and affordable… I’d say yes in a heartbeat. Lifestyle is easygoing, zero complications, health, education and recreational services available for all. And the real estate opportunities? Hard to pass by. Take a look at this 1 BR, 1 BA Laguna Vista Condo walking distance to downtown San Jose and a short drive to the beach – just think that this could be your perfect getaway for those cold harsh winter months.
So what are you waiting for! Come on down and see for yourself what you have been waiting your whole life. I did and I found many more reasons to stay and to call this amazing piece of paradise my home.
