Coldwell Banker Riveras Cares! The Los Cabos Humane Society

By Jennifer Powell

I will never forget seeing all the homeless animals when I first came to Cabo back in 1987.  Street dogs, beach dogs, stray dogs and cats were everywhere back then.  We can all give thanks to the Los Cabos Humane Society for making a large change in the stray and feral population.  In just the past two years over 8,500 free spay/neuter surgeries have been performed!

I recently adopted a dog from the shelter, named Trixie who has been a great addition to my family.  If you can’t adopt a pet here in Cabo, there are still many ways you can help out.  You can volunteer at the shelter, and they need dog walkers every day from 8:30-10:30 am, and again from 4:30-6:00pm.  They also need people to hang out with the cats to give them some interaction and affection so if you’re not up for walking that would be a great option.

Financial donations are critical, as the Humane Society receives no governmental assistance at all, so it is strictly run on donations.  Your donations are tax deductible if you are a US citizen.  Check out their website for all the options for donating along with their wish list at:

You can purchase tickets to the annual Dressed to the K9’s event (one of the most glamorous and fun events in the area!) to show your support as well, and look for information on the Expo de Mascotas on April 27th. You’ll probably see me there!

I invite you to visit the shelter, or stop by at the Los Cabos Organic Market in Pedregal on Wednesdays and Saturdays mornings. Feel free to contact me at: if you have any questions about the different ways you can help and make the difference for an animal!
