The good life at Baja’s East Cape
What to do & where to go? What to expect!
By Araceli Vargas.
First ask the locals! People in Los Barriles are very friendly and always welcome tourists; they will guide you or will recommend to you what’s best according to your level of interest
Los Barriles is well known as a fishing village along the sea of Cortez with a relaxed lifestyle. But, what does relaxed lifestyle mean for locals and previous visitors? It means it is a piece of paradise with fun and different adventures every day!
What to do and where to go? What to expect!
Let’s start with an offshore fishing day! You can go to any hotel, downtown fishing stores or ask the locals for a private and personalized fishing tour. Nothing more exciting than getting up early, meeting your captain at the dock and getting in the boat while enjoying a first row seat to incredible sunrises and a cup of steamy coffee. The rest is about fun and luck! Once at sea you can expect a beautiful sunny day and test your fishing abilities. Meanwhile get your camera ready to capture dolphins, turtles, sea lions, and in season, humpback grey whales. Most of the fishermen in the area are used to catching blue marlin, mahi mahi, tuna, and red snapper, just to mention some species.
For a more adventurous soul there is always a fun Kiteboarding experience! Feel the freshness of the salty air on your face and the adrenaline pumping as you sail thru the turquoise Sea of Cortez waters, I highly recommend that you go with a professional instructor and learn the basics first, once you are familiar with the equipment and procedures it will be like a piece of cake for you. Stop by at ExotiKite Kiteboarding School & Store where you will find everything you need right there, including a casual restaurant, comfortable accommodation and a SUP center.
ATV’s road trips! Pure fun and adrenaline discovering desert trails and beaches. Travel to the quaint towns nearby: San Bartolo, El Cardonal and La Rivera to discover a stunning combination of desert and sea, waterfalls and canyons. Enjoy with locals their typical food and regional fruits. I recommend that you to drive by the beach at Punta Pescadero and El Cardonal, where you can have a break and practice snorkeling in its turquoise water. Look for Can-Doo Rentals & Adventures located in downtown Los Barriles, they offer good service and can assist you.
There are many things you can also enjoy: kayak, paddle board, scuba diving, hiking, camping, stargazing at night, and of course, simply relax by the beach. Baja’s East Cape is blessed with miles of empty, swimmable beaches, my favorite ones are La Capilla, Spa Buena Vista, La Gaviota in Buena Vista, Los Barriles and North Los Barriles. Bring your sunblock and enjoy the peace and natural beauty of the Sea of Cortez and its fresh breezes all year long. Camping with a bonfire party at full moon is a must, have you tried it?
Take my word and visit us with your family and friends to start creating memories in our side of paradise!
